The English Market, Cork City: This covered market in Cork City – here since 1788, and recently visited by Queen Elizabeth II – is open 8am to 6pm daily. It is often likened to Barcelona’s famous Boqueria market. Driving time: 60 minutes.
Farmgate Restaurant, Midleton: Maróg O’Brien and her daughter Sally preside over this well-loved restaurant focusing on local producers – including fish landed at Ballycotton Pier. All dishes are handled simply, with a minimum of fuss. Driving time: 35 minutes.
Ahernes, Youghal: Famous seafood restaurant in the historic walled seaside resort of Youghal. Family run, this restaurant exudes comfort and warmth. Driving time: 15 minutes.
Summer House, Lismore: Ideal for a simple, delicious Irish café-style lunch of soup, sandwiches and cakes. Driving time: 35 minutes.
360 Cookhouse, Dungarvan: Adjoining Dungarvan Castle, this bright and casual restaurant offers full menus alongside light tapas and great cocktails. Very dog friendly. Driving time: 15 minutes
Barron’s Bakery and Coffee House, Cappoquin: Among Irish foodies this is something of a cult address. The bakery, which dates from 1887, still uses the same Scotch Brick Ovens to bake their crusty bread. Driving time: 25 minutes.
The Spinnaker, Dunmore East: For one of the best seafood chowders in all of Ireland, stop by this easy-going pub in seaside Dunmore East. Driving time: 60 minutes.
Ballymaloe, Shanagarry: This is a destination restaurant for gourmands in pursuit of home-style Irish cooking by the famous Allen family. Driving time: 40 minutes.
The Local, Dungarvan: Overlooking Dungarvan Square, this family run bar offers home made food for lunch and dinner, often in the company of Irish traditional music.
The Tannery, Dungarvan: Chef Paul Flynn continues to pull in a loyal crowd with his keenly priced food – and exceptional braised ox cheeks. Driving time: 15 minutes.
Merry’s Gastropub, Dungarvan: A good choice for families after reasonably priced, well-cooked pub grub and some excellent local ales. Driving time: 15 minutes.
The Moorings, Dungarvan: Fish and chips or seafood chowder overlooking Dungarvan Bay — it doesn’t get more maritime than that. Driving time: 15 minutes.
L’Atmosphere, Waterford: For when you fancy a change from Irish cuisine, then the French country cooking of this Waterford City restaurant fits the bill. Driving time: 60 minutes.
